Cedar Summerhouses

Western Red Cedar – Timeless Quality

Slow grown and naturally durable, Western Red Cedar has one of the longest life spans of any of the timber species. It is naturally resistant to moisture, decay and insect damage. Being straight grained, it has excellent dimensional stability which means it won’t warp or twist.  The naturally occurring oils in Red Cedar called ‘thujaplicins’ means the wood contains its own preservative giving a natural resistance to decay. Properly finished and maintained, cedar will deliver decades of low maintenance timber providing unmatched durability and versatility – qualities that make it perhaps the most beloved and valued of the building woods.

Our traditional style luxury summerhouses are all handcrafted from the finest Western Red Cedar. Every summerhouse is built to exacting standards and will stand the test of time. They are expertly finished with a long lasting shingle roof and can be painted or staine d to suit your garden setting.

Appearance

Cedar is renowned for its natural distinctive beauty and outstanding physical properties that make it one of the world’s most unique softwood species. It’s rich and variegated colouring ranges from pale saffron to a deep honeyed ochre. Over the years, this gives way to an attractive patina of silvery grey. It’s warm colouring is complimented by a uniform, fine-grained texture with a satin lustre. Recognisable by its fine straight grains, reddish tones and pleasant fragrance cedar is our preferred choice as aesthetic appeal, durability and weather resistance are important. Though rich in extractives that enhance durability, it is free of the pitch and resin found in other softwoods. That makes it ideal for a wide range of finishes, from lightly toned natural stain to solid colours paint finish, it ranks at the top in its ability to accept and maintain a finish.

Thermal protection

When it comes to thermal insulation, cedar is both practical and eco-friendly. It has superior thermal insulating properties and is far superior to brick, concrete and steel. This helps keep your summerhouse cool in the summer and reduce heating costs in the winter. With the added option of insulation and double glazing you will have a summerhouse that can be used in all seasons, whatever the weather.  Our summerhouses roofs made from Western Red Cedar shingles also offer a high degree of thermal insulation. In technical terms an important acoustical property of timber is its ability to dampen vibrations. cedar has a cellular network of minute interlocking pores which convert sound energy into heat by frictional and viscoelastic resistance.

Cedar Shingles

Chelsea Summerhouses sources its shingles from manufacturers who are members of the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau. All shingles used in our roofs have the ‘Certi-Grade’ quality assurance label and have PEFC Chain of Custody to ensure both a legal and sustainable product. Shingles are produced in 3 grades. These are referred to as Blue Label, Red label and Black Label. Chelsea Summerhouses only use Blue Label shingles as they are the only recommended ones for use in the UK. They are:  100% Heartwood – this is the durable part of the tree (sapwood easily decays), 100% Edge grain – this ensures the shingle is stable, doesn’t cup and again more durable, 100% All clear – this ensures the shingle is free of defects such as knots.
