What is a Summerhouse?

A summerhouse or summer house has traditionally referred to a building or shelter used for relaxation in warm weather. Typically constructed from timber and often designed to provide cool shady places of relaxation or retreat from the summer heat. Nowadays the term “Summerhouse” can often be misleading. Chelsea Summerhouses are offered with lining and insulation and with the option of electricity , they can be used all year round. Literally a ‘Room For All Seasons’.

See Your Garden From A New Perspective!

Every family really needs a summerhouse. Why? It enables you to be “out in the garden” when, without such protection, it is just too cold or wet. In among the flowers, at the edge of the lawn, a summerhouse can be a real safe haven that will cheer you up and keep you out of the wind – every bit important as being dry. Having a summerhouse in the garden can offer new opportunities to give your garden and home personality and character. It will certainly create a focal point to complement your garden’s theme. It will also give you additional living and relaxation space away from the main home.  You can equip it with comfortable chairs, a table at which to eat, lighting and heating – the world is your oyster. Your summerhouse can be as basic or luxurious as you like.

Be Inspired!

Why not take a look at our gallery for style and design inspiration of your own. Our range encompasses different shapes and sizes; they can seat from two to 12 people in different styles to suit all tastes. A larger summerhouse may be suitable for use as a dining or socialising space to share with friends and family or as a craft, hobby or work room. A smaller compact summerhouse can provide the perfect garden hideaway, a snug for some vital me time.

What Are Summerhouses Used For?

A garden summer house can be used as your very own special space. It can be transformed into a studio for writing, painting or other crafting activities, or can simply become a space for you to relax in and enjoy your leisure time. The possibilities are endless, from home office to home gym or merely a garden retreat, your summerhouse, you decide.

As with most things in life, you generally get what you pay for with summerhouses and garden buildings. A mass-produced, budget-price summerhouse, costing hundreds of pounds is unlikely to last more than a few years and could prove to be a false economy in the long run. We pride ourselves on producing luxury summerhouses using only the highest quality materials and workmanship. They are all handmade in Cedar which is one of the most durable long lasting timbers. Properly finished and maintained, cedar will deliver decades of low maintenance timber providing unmatched durability and versatility – qualities that make it perhaps the most beloved and valued of the building woods.

Does A Summerhouse Need Planning Permission?

As a general rule, summerhouses aren’t classed as permanent structures and so don’t usually require planning permission (there are exceptions to this rule). If you do require planning we offer a no fee planning service and we have never had planning refused for our summerhouses. Please see here for further information.
